Postpartum Care

A specialist postpartum physiotherapy assessment can help you restore your pelvic floor and core postpartum, whether you’ve had a vaginal or caesarean birth.

Postpartum Check

An in-depth postpartum assessment looks at the strength, activation, and function of your pelvic floor muscles and abdominals following childbirth. We'll investigate the underlying cause of any symptoms for lasting results.

A postpartum check includes:

  • Discussion of your concerns and short and long-term goals.

  • Thorough review of your medical history, including your pregnancy, labour, and recovery thus far.

  • Assessment of your posture, breathing, movement, and any musculoskeletal issues that have arisen from pregnancy or birth.

  • Check for a diastasis recti or tummy gap.

  • Functional assessment of your deep core muscles.

  • Internal vaginal exam to assess the impact of pregnancy and labor on your pelvic floor muscles and ensure they are functioning optimally.

  • Scar assessment (perineal, episiotomy, caesarean).

  • A customised rehabilitation program tailored to your individual needs and goals.

  • Urinary leakage (even a few drops when you laugh, cough, sneeze, run, or jump)

  • Urinary urgency

  • Leakage of poop or gas

  • Pelvic organ prolapse

  • Diastasis recti or tummy gap

  • Pelvic pain

  • Tailbone Pain (Coccydynia)

  • Low back pain

  • Pain with sex

  • Constipation

  • Neck and Shoulder Pain

  • Return to running or sport

Common Treatment Areas

Many symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction are common postpartum, but that doesn't make them normal. These symptoms aren't just a new part of motherhood that you have to learn to live with.

Whether you gave birth eight weeks or eight years ago, it’s never too late to seek help.

Your pelvic floor muscles have worked much harder than usual through pregnancy, labour, and birth and generally can use some help regaining their full function. Pelvic floor physiotherapy can help you regain confidence, get on with your life, and return to the sports and activities you love.
